During the week of Nov. 22 to Nov. 28 there are multiple community events to take part in. The University is closed on Nov. 25 and Nov. 26 for Thanksgiving weekend. While Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cybermonday are all in full swing, these community events are taking place.

  1. Veteran and Military Affairs Virtual 1M, 5K, and 10K

Through Nov. 30

The virtual race is open to all FIU students, faculty, staff and community members. To participate, you have to register online and record your time before Nov. 30 at 11:59 p.m. Those who register will receive a free t-shirt and finisher medal. If you would like to participate in the Virtual event, there’s still time to do so.

  1. Santa Claus is Coming to Town!

Friday, Nov. 26

The Shops at Pembroke Gardens is having Santa visit their mall starting on Nov. 26. Pictures with Santa will be available during the meeting, taking place during select weekends in December as well.

  1. Makos Warhol in China 40 Years Later

Wednesday, Nov. 24

The work of Christopher Makos will be on display in Miami Beach as a celebration of the 40 years since Makos visited China with Andy Warhol. Other rare portraits will be on display at the exhibition, which will lead some Miami Basel Week events.

  1. Healthy Living Presents Mindful Eating

Tuesday, Nov. 23

FIU’s Healthy Living is having a workshop on Tuesday afternoon on how to enjoy the holidays and eat mindfully. They will go over what mindful eating is and how to implement it. The workshop will be held in the Green Library at the Modesto Maidique Campus.

  1. Drive-Thru Thanksgiving Turkey Distribution

Monday, Nov. 22

The City of North Miami Beach will be distributing turkeys at three drive-thru locations this year. The locations are the Eastern Shores Tot Lot, the Public Works Operation Center, and the Uleta Park Community Center. Kosher turkeys are also available by request.

FIU will be closed on Thursday, Nov 25 for Thanksgiving. Classes will resume for students the following Monday, Nov. 29.

  1. Art with Me – Miami 

Nov. 26 – Nov. 28

A celebration of art is being held that promises fun for the entire family. With events focusing on the themes of “Art, Dance, Breathe, Play, Eat, and Care,” the event will have classes and events for everyone. Joined by more than sixty-five music acts the event also provides a shared culinary experience and local artisans to sell their wares.

  1. Ivan Loboguerrero Hidden Figures Exhibit 

Saturday, Nov. 27

Colombian artist Ivan Loboguerrero will have his collection, “Hidden Figures” on display at the Rosenbaum Contemporary gallery until December 11th. The collection focuses on having the viewer look past the larger picture into the smaller details to find the true essence of the work. The collection will be open to the public and can be seen during regular gallery hours.
