Mike MacIntyre has been announced as the next head coach of the FIU football program.
MacIntyre has been among a mix of several candidates for the head coaching position since former coach Butch Davis was released following the end of the 2021 football season.
In a statement by newly appointed athletic director Scott Carr and FIU President Mark B. Rosenberg, MacIntyre rose to the top of the list with his ability to rebuild a program. “He’s a brand builder who will promote FIU throughout the South Florida community and the state of Florida. We could not be more excited to bring his energy and passion to campus.”
MacIntyre, age 56, is a Miami native. His coaching experience spans over 30 years, with experience in both college football as well as the NFL. He has previously served as the defensive backs coach for the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets, along with being the head coach of the San Jose State Spartans and Colorado Buffaloes.
His success with Colorado in the 2016 season (when they went 10-4 and make it to the Pac-12 Championship game) earned him a list of accolades, including nine coach of the year awards.
His most recent job was with the Memphis Tigers this past season, where he was the defensive coordinator.
“Coach MacIntyre is high energy, passionate about student-athlete success and happy to be back home in Miami,” said Rosenberg.
FIU football is coming off a 1-11 season with their only win coming in the beginning of the year against the Long Island Sharks, an FCS school. Their last win against an FBS school was over two years ago against the Miami Hurricanes.
Plagued by injuries, controversy surrounding the statements made by Davis regarding the FIU administration, as well as 10+ students entering the transfer portal, the football program was in need of a head coaching hire before signing week begins on December 15. MacIntyre will hold a press conference at 1:30pm on Thursday, December 9 at the GC Pit.
