The week of Jan. 17 to Jan. 23 is packed with different events taking place all over South Florida. Students, faculty and staff can enjoy these events ranging from Miami Beach to Pinecrest Gardens and beyond. As everyone settles into the new semester, it’s important to take some time to unwind and see what the city has to offer.

  1. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (University Closed)

Monday, Jan. 17

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on Jan. 15, 1929 and assassinated on Apr. 4, 1968. The civil rights leader and activist dedicated his life to the movement. He was a Baptist minister as well and had a wife, Coretta Scott King, and four children. Every year on the Monday following his birthday, the nation takes off school and work to commemorate his memory. This year is no different, and the university will be closed for both students and faculty in memory of the civil rights leader.
