After nearly two years of litigation, the family of one of six people killed in the 2018 FIU bridge collapse has privately settled its lawsuit against the engineering consulting firm Louis Berger Group.

All other claims against the engineering firms that were involved in the bridge construction were previously settled in 2019. The settlements amounted to a total of $103 million.

The family of Brandon Brownfield, who was killed when the bridge collapsed on top of his car, carried forward the final settlement. They argued that the New Jersey firm had failed to detect key design errors by the original engineers.

A judge ruled in favor of the family in October, contending that there was enough evidence for the case to go to trial.

Weeks before the trial was set to begin, Louis Berger Group decided to settle.

Brownfield is survived by his wife and three daughters.
