There is a new club at FIU bringing together students with a passion for artificial intelligence and computer technology. The Artificial Intelligence and Coding Club (AICC) began in Spring 2022 and is recruiting new members for the upcoming fall semester.

The AICC began as a conversation between Ketulkumar Polara, a student pursuing an MA in Information Technology, and Yashas Hariprasad, a Ph.D. student in Computer Science, two strangers who happened to bond over a love for AI. Together, they created the AICC with the help of their faculty supervisor, Dr. S.S. Iyengar.

The club’s mission is to teach students from any field to apply AI and coding to any domain. The AICC also strongly believes in destigmatizing AI sentiments, a topic that Polara is passionate about.

“It doesn’t matter what you’re studying or what your major is… AI can be applied anywhere… People don’t know enough about the positive side of AI and we would like to educate them more on that,” said Polara.

Dr. S.S. Iyengar at the “AI Driven OS, Internet, Security, and Application Development for Next Generation” workshop held on Jan. 28, 2022 via the Artificial Intelligence and Coding Club.

Last spring, the club held its first event: Dr. Iyengar and guest speaker FIU postdoctoral researcher Dr. KJ Latesh Kumar led a workshop on the application of AI within computer technology and development.

The workshop consisted of a lecture and discussion which promoted conversation amongst students and also allowed them to network with the speakers.

Despite being relatively new, members can already see the impact of the AICC in their own lives.

When speaking about how the club impacted him personally, Polara said “the club has really helped me improve my communication skills. Running the club has increased my knowledge of AI and taught me to be more disciplined.”

AICC boasts some 45 members and plans to keep expanding during the Fall semester. The club is working on hosting weekly workshops and meetings as well as creating a Discord channel to keep members up to date. To stay updated, follow @fiuaicoding on Instagram.
