FIU tennis brought out their brooms and swept No. 36 Maryland in a dominant 4-0 win on March 4 at the FIU Tennis Courts in Miami, Florida.
The win snaps the Terrapins’ six-match winning streak and keeps FIU undefeated on its home court. The Panthers improve to 6-3 overall.
Junior Salma Loudili and freshman Katerina Mandelikova had their first ranked win of the season over Maryland’s No. 45 Mary Brumfield and Selma Cadar, 6-1. It was then followed up by sophomore Yasmine Kabbaj and freshman Oyinlomo Quadre, who kept the ball rolling with their sixth straight win, beating Jojo Bach and Hannah McColgan 6-2 to clinch the point.
The Panthers then uncorked a vicious combination of three-straight singles wins to clinch the victory.
Kabbaj got the avalanche started with her win at the No. 1 position over Cadar, 6-1, 6-0. Mandelikova then recorded her second straight victory at the No. 5 spot, 6-2, 6-4, over Terrapins’ Francesca Feodorov.
Quadre, the reigning Conference USA Tennis Athlete of the Week, shut the door right in Maryland’s face with a resounding 6-3, 6-3, win over Minorka Miranda.
FIU now prepares itself for a match against Michigan State on Tuesday, March 7. First serve is slated for noon.
