FIU has announced that it will be prohibiting access to the Chinese social media app TikTok, as well as other apps on campus networks, effective immediately. The action follows a recent emergency amendment to regulation 3.0075 by the Florida Board of Governors, governing body of Florida’s 12 public universities.

According to a statement released by FIU’s Department of Internet Technology, the March 29 decision requires all public universities to remove these programs from university-owned devices and to block school networks from providing access to these services..

In addition to TikTok, Russian anti-virus software Kaspersky, Russian social media app VKontakte; as well as Chinese messaging apps Tencent QQ and WeChat were also placed on the system’s list of banned technologies.

The decision and FIU’s compliance with it have been made in the interest of “protecting… the university’s information against cyber threats,” according to the statement.

The Division of Information Technology is currently unavailable for comment at this time.
