Industry professionals shared their expertise in career workshops at FIU’s first-ever Women in Technology conference.

On March 24, WiTCON was held in Parking Garage 6 of the Modesto Maidique campus by several student organizations, including INIT, short for the programming term “initialize”, Women in Computer Science, Blockchain At FIU, and Women in Cybersecurity.

The convention aimed to give attendees of all genders opportunities to network with other participants and established professionals and alumni in the industry, as well as present companies to a diverse group of hires and host accessible workshops on fundamental tech concepts.

“Our overarching mission with this event was to create a space for women in tech. By hosting female-led panels, workshops, and activities, we hope to provide representation for other girls in the field and show that although it is male-dominated at the moment, we’re not going anywhere,” said Nicole Cruz, president of Women in Computer Science in the event’s official press release.

Ali Segovia, senior consultant at Microsoft, and Andrica Alexander, technology attorney, were among the industry experts invited.

Each organization contributed to the convention in different ways. For example, Women in Cybersecurity held panels on certifications and the cybersecurity private sector, and Blockchain At FIU emphasized digital wallet literacy and the fundamentals of Web3 technology.

“Our hope is that WITCON 2023 sets the precedent and movement in South Florida that empowers women to step into technology, and know that there are organizations like WICS, WICYS, Blockchain at FIU, and INIT, that are here to help them grow,” added Juliana Echavarria, president of Blockchain At FIU.

Sponsors for the event included H.E.R. DAO, a developer collective for women, and World of Women, an organization for NFT artists and enthusiasts.

“Together, we aim to continue fostering an inclusive and diverse community that empowers women in technology and beyond,” said the WiTCON planning committee.
