Former FIU Athletic Director Dr. Richard “Dick” Young passed away June 27, 2023 in Boca Raton, Florida. A man of remarkable talents and honor, his legacy carries on through his two daughters, Pam and Alyson.
Nicknamed the “Fix-It” man, Young led a life of hard work and dedication, making a meaningful impact in every facet of his career.
Infatuated with sports, from an early age Young showed his passion for baseball, basketball and football, eventually participating in both high school and college.
Young was a recognized decorated Naval aviator, serving the U.S. Navy for a total of three years, three months and four days.
FIU hired Young as the athletic director on June 1, 1987, where he brought national attention to the school by getting them into Division 1 of the NCAA.
During his time at FIU, Young focused on solidifying the Panthers’ sense of teamwork and community. Between his experience in the Navy and time working with Woody Hayes, Young earned a reputation for his winning habits and keen insight.
Within the first 15 months of his position as athletic director, Young brought success to the baseball team, as they won 40 games for a third consecutive season, establishing FIU as a nationally respected program.
Dr. Young also emphasized the importance of retaining a solid advisory board and administrative staff, implementing various new hires such as Janice Allen and Richard Gropper. Through his leadership and insight, Young helped build FIU Athletics to a signifIcant program in the NCAA, making a monumental impact on the entire school.
