The FIU Men’s Soccer team is set to face the VCU Rams tonight at the FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Florida.
In their previous game, the Panthers opened up their season with a 2-1 victory against the Oregon State Beavers, giving them a 1-0 record heading into this matchup.
Notably, junior forward Eduardo Mustre had a standout performance against the Beavers, helping FIU claim victory by scoring both of the team’s goals. In only his first game as a Panther, Mustre made an impact on the team immediately.
For the Rams, their most recent match saw them go head-to-head with the New Hampshire Wildcats, resulting in an 1-1 draw, giving them a 0-0-1 record to start their season.
Holding the lead for the majority of the game, the Wildcats grew complacent towards the end of the match, paving the way for VCU to secure a game-tying score.
With the clock running down on the Rams, junior midfielder Damian Gallegos ensured a goal for the team at the 72 minute mark, evening up the game at 1-1.
As little time remained in the game, neither team could pull away with a lead, resulting in a tie.
Historically, the Panthers hold a 2-0 record against VCU, which could lead to some tension and urgency coming from the Rams.
When both teams last met, the Panthers secured a 1-0 victory on the Rams’ home field.
Both teams struggled out of the gates, remaining evenly matched until a crucial goal in the 46th minute by senior forward Simon Afrifa.
FIU outshot the Rams 23-12 throughout the match, but kept a narrow advantage in shots on goal.
If the Panthers want to secure a win, they will need to establish a strong control of the ball early in the match and remain disciplined by avoiding unnecessary penalties.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Florida and the game will be broadcasted on ESPN+.
