An FIU student was shot on the afternoon of Nov. 3 in his Westchester home, dead when officers arrived at the scene.

According to original reporting from the Miami Herald, the shooting occurred at 10703 SW 84th Ave., with only the victim and father home during the incident – around 2:00 p.m.

Later reporting identified the victim as Eric Contreras, 21, an FIU student and construction management major.

David DeJesus Contreras, his father, was charged with second-degree murder with a weapon and is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami Springs.

Members of FIU’s Greek life said Contreras was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. Ben Sardinas, Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter advisor, did not comment but told PantherNOW that the fraternity would release a statement.

Shortly after, Mike Hernández, chapter adviser for communications, reached out to PantherNOW via text with the following statement.

“The brothers of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Florida Nu Chapter at Florida International University are heartbroken to have learned this morning of the loss of one our own, Eric Contreras.”

“Eric was a committed SigEp who will always be remembered for being a caring man and for lighting up any room he was in. He truly embodied our cardinal principles of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. All brothers are being offered free counseling services by FIU. Anyone who feels they need to speak with a professional is being encouraged to contact the Office of Counseling and Psychological Services at 305-348-2277.”

“The chapter asks for its brothers’ privacy to be respected during this very difficult time.”
