The Wellness and Recreation Center at MMC debuts a new and improved Functional Training Area following the generous investment of $24,066 made by SGA.

During the official inauguration ceremony on March 28 at 11 AM, Student Body President Alexander Sutton unveiled the new establishment with more than a dozen prominent members of the FIU Student Government Association present along with staff members of WRC.

Senior Director of Campus Recreation at FIU, Linda Buonnano was also present during the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

“I am extremely proud to see that the Wellness and Recreation Center continues to have a strong relationship with the Student Government Association. Health and wellness are some of the cornerstones of the student experience,” Sutton said, highlighting the productive collaboration between the SGA and WRC.

The WRC at MMC has also arranged unique workout classes like ReggaeFit, Soca, and African with hopes of increasing student government involvement with FIU activities and the FIU community in 2019.

The upgraded training area is located near the WRC’s Tropical Smoothie Cafe for the students’ convenience. SGA president Sutton passed Executive Order 4-04 on October 23rd of last year which allowed the allocation of $24,066 of students’ activity and service fees to the WRC in order to purchase functional training equipment.

“We need to ensure that our facilities are well-maintained and meet the needs of our continually growing student body. I look forward to seeing our students utilize the revitalized space, now the Functional Training Area, for years to come,” Sutton said, anticipating a high turnout of students utilizing the new space.

The Wellness & Recreation Center had undergone an expansion beginning in 2015 that increased the size of the existing facility by 61,000+ square feet with many useful additions such as an expanded weight area, a racquetball/squash convertible court, an exclusive room for spinning equipment and a Fitness Assessment Office.

These added facilities greatly helped to tackle the problem of overcrowdedness the establishment was suffering from previously as pointed out by many FIU alumni. Currently, the entire WRC consists of 11,000 square feet.

FIU’s WRC has consistently been providing students with opportunities to improve their mental and physical health for a long time.

In 2019, they hosted ‘Campus Rec Combine’-a series of competitions where the students got to test their agility, endurance, strength, and mental abilities through events such as a 40-yard dash, a broad jump, a three-cone drill, passing and kicking skills, etc in two separate divisions for male and female students.

The arrangements allowed both participants and spectators to have a great time on the day of the event.

The newly included equipment in the Functional Training Area targets multiple muscle groups and is believed to be preferred by individuals who are trying to emulate natural movements in their workout routine.
