FIU Faculty Senate met on Zoom Tuesday to vote on the approval or rejection of numerous courses, and whether they would remain a part of the University Core Curriculum, including courses such as Sociology of Gender and Anthropology of Race & Ethnicity.
Many other similar courses got approval for their modification of course descriptions and course learning outcomes.
Since the passing of Title XLVIII Section 1007 last year, UCC requirements within FIU now have had to be reviewed and potentially modified by the Faculty Senate and state authority to ensure that these courses are within accordance to Florida regulations.
The main concern revolving around Title XLVIII Section 1007 is specifically 3C: “General education core courses may not distort significant historical events or include a curriculum that teaches identity politics, violates s. 1000.05, or is based on theories that systemic racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are inherent in the institutions of the United States and were created to maintain social, political, and economic inequities.”
Motion 1 is entirely focused on the modifications of course description and learning outcome in accordance to BOG Regulation 8.005 General Education Course Option and passed with majority vote.
Faculty and students alike are concerned that these modifications are politically charged and revolve around censorship in university curriculums – all these course description and learning outcome modifications are made public.
These troubles can be seen reflected through revisions made, for example, for LBS 3001 Labor and Globalization where the new course description has a strikethrough the major topics of “class politics in the United States”, “work, race, ethnicity, and equality”, and “work, gender, equality”, the strikethrough meaning that these major topics have been removed.
Motion 2 failed in voting, denying the removal of AMH 3560 History of Women in the United States and ESC 3021 Women, Culture and Economic Developement.
Motion 3 approved the removal of AMH 2041 and AMH 2042 due to their redundancy in relation to already existing courses like AMH 2010 and AMH 2020.
Motions 4, 5, and 6, all failed in voting to remove SOP 3004, ANT 3451 and SYD 3804 in concern that their removal is an attempt of curriculum censorship voiced by numerous faculty and students at the meeting.
Motions 7, 8, and 9 were all approved by the Faculty Senate to keep the courses WST 3015, WST 3641 and AFA 2004 within UCC requirements, “unless it is determined by a state authority responsible for interpreting/enforcing Florida Statute that they are prohibited from inclusion under FS1007.55 or FS1007.25,” according the Faculty Senate minutes.
The new courses are likely to change the scope and character of future degree-seekers to come.
