As AI is being pushed on us more and more, how will it affect creatives?
There are already legal disputes against AI from content creators, writers, coders and artists over copyright issues. Creatives are accusing tech companies of training their AI’s learning systems with their work without their permission.
In publishing, we’re seeing AI used in marketing, audiobook production and even in the writing process itself. Some argue that it can be used as an editing or brainstorming tool, but there is still a lingering fear that the damage it may cause greatly outweighs the potential pros.
In 2023, screenwriters in Hollywood went on strike, calling for a virtual ban on AI being used to create entertainment content and to keep their work from being used as a training tool. This goal is something all content creators should fight for.
In 2024 companies in the gaming, TV, music and film industries have laid off a significant amount of their workforce to reduce costs. A study shows that 204,000 entertainment jobs will be affected by AI and so far 25% of creative businesses have implemented AI in their workplace.
I fear cost cuts, widespread layoffs and AI will impact and severely reduce the human passion and creativity put into entertainment projects. This also leads to fewer opportunities and smaller wages for artists in the industry.
Faster doesn’t mean better. The beauty of a work comes from knowing the amount of time, dedication and work that goes into it, that it’s a tangible part of someone’s soul.
Music is something most people use to help them get through their day, it’s something we can all relate to. But to see it be slowly overrun by 1’s and 0’s is heartbreaking.
Composing a song shouldn’t take 5 minutes. Writing lyrics and creating the instrumentals is introspective work that should invoke real emotions. It’s the same with creating a film, novel or painting.
The essence of art comes from the human spirit, hardships, victories and life lessons. Something AI will never encapsulate.
