Deadpool & Wolverine is a bloodbath of fun

Thank goodness for Marvel and their endless sequels!

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman join forces in director Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine, with Jackman returning as Wolverine for the first time since Logan.

The highly anticipated third installment in the Deadpool franchise has already dominated the box office, becoming the second highest grossing film of 2024 in just two weeks.

The first Deadpool movie to be released since the Walt Disney Company bought 20th Century Fox, any question that the acquisition would affect the character can be laid to rest.

The movie sacrifices exactly zero percent of Deadpool’s beloved crassness–I actually thought that, of the three, this was the most ambitious in terms of bloodshed, violence, and rate of sexual jokes per minute. Thank you, Mickey Mouse!

It is also the most existential and serious of the trilogy, following a dejected Deadpool searching for a purpose and a guilt-ridden Wolverine trying his hardest to drown himself in alcohol, as the two try to save Deadpool’s timeline from extinction.

That’s not to say it isn’t also completely hilarious. The humor of the Deadpool movies can be a hit or miss, depending on how much you’ve matured since middle school, but if you enjoy a good inappropriate laugh, this is the movie for you. Same goes with how much dismemberment you can stomach.

I’m not ashamed to say I was clutching my stomach the entire movie. Deadpool’s jokes were as clever and meta as ever, and even more so with the added ability to poke fun at the MCU and Fox.

As a duo, Deadpool and Wolverine make for the perfect buddy movie. The ultimate unstoppable force meets immovable object, it was nothing short of hysterical to watch the gruff Wolverine have to partner with the impish Deadpool. Some of the biggest laughs I had were just from watching Jackman squint incredulously at Reynolds’s antics. Their arc from reluctant teammates to friends was touching and, as a fan, exciting to watch.

One of the best parts of watching the two characters together was watching them mutilate each other.

Thanks to their healing powers, they’re practically immortal- this made their fight scenes delightfully unserious in ways other superhero fights simply can’t be.

It was a treat to be able to watch Wolverine skewer Deadpool and know that nothing tragic was incoming, and I could just enjoy watching Deadpool shoot Wolverine right back.

Being the latest in a long line of attempts to explore the Marvel multiverse, the movie is chock-full of fan service cameos. Admittedly, some are too specific for the casual viewer–but for the dedicated fan, it’s a dream come true.

With an eclectic soundtrack, a mismatched duo, and an astounding amount of fake blood, Deadpool & Wolverine is funny, self-aware, and refreshing in a way superhero films haven’t been in a long time. As a viewer, you can’t help but cheer for more the second the credits roll.

Let’s hope they actually do make Hugh Jackman do this until he’s 90.

10/10
