Mental health has been disregarded long enough and even though society is becoming more accepting, there is still much to improve on.
Myths continue to thrive making it difficult for anyone with any sort of mental health issues to come forward. From myths like anxiety will go away by itself to social anxiety is just shyness, it makes it harder to understand what anxiety is.
These misconceptions tend to belittle people experiences and invalidates them which is why awareness is important.
The fact is, anxiety is hard to control and it is often treated with medication. Anxiety is also proven to be the most common mental disorder out there amongst all age groups.
Even though the term anxiety tends to be thrown around loosely, it’s still hard for some to accept the fact that it’s a daily struggle to overcome.
College students especially have it hard when they are juggling so many things in their day to day lives. As we are just trying to stay afloat with class work piling up and working, it’s inevitable to come across a situation that presents us with unwanted anxiety.
Anxiety is an extremely taxing disorder for anyone. When it comes to school alone, we have so many things thrown at us at once so dealing with our anxiety in a healthy way is vital.
Taking a step back and re-evaluating certain aspects that come with overwhelming anxiety can be a great way to manage anxiety— but it’s not a solution.
Anxiety needs more awareness and attention rather than being considered taboo causing no one to acknowledge it.
As we continue to learn about anxiety and understand what it actually is, people who suffer from anxiety now should not be neglected.
FIU has services available to help with anxiety and more. Things like counseling and assessments can aid the student body in any way they need.
Anxiety has been around for millenia. It has been ignored in the past, and it is unfortunately ignored even today. This disorder should be taken seriously and be treated with the respect it deserves.
