With fall semester beginning again, FIU Theatre has announced its major productions for its 2024-2025 season, its 51st one.

The first production they will be putting on is “John Proctor is the Villain”, a play by Kimberly Bellflower.

It outlines the lives of a group of teenage girls in 2018 as they study “The Crucible”, and as it mirrors their lives. It’s certainly a coming of age story, dealing with themes of sexual assault and using one’s voice. It is also hailed as light and funny, but serious when it needs to be.

If you want to watch it at FIU, it will be going on from Sept. 27-Oct. 6.

After that, FIU Theatre will be performing the Conor McPherson adaptation of  “Uncle Vanya” by Anton Chekhov

This play was first written in 1899 in Moscow, Russia, and has been performed all over since then.

It is about a man named Ivan Voynitsky, or Uncle Vanya, as he slowly realizes his hopeless situation—that he’s wasted all his time taking care of his ex brother-in-law’s businesses and affairs, when the other man will never shape up to be anything great.

It deals heavily with themes of hopelessness in one’s life as well as disenchantment with Russian country life. However, it has some light moments too, making the mark as a tragicomedy.

“Uncle Vanya” will be on at FIU from Nov. 15-Nov. 24.

Next up will be the very famous Rodgers and Hammerstein production, “Cinderella.”

Although you’ve probably heard of this story, it follows the story of Cinderella, a young lady who’s scorned by her “evil” stepmother and stepsisters.

She manages to steal a moment with the prince at a special ball, and magic aids her in her journey to him.

Without giving it all away, the full synopsis is available here.

FIU will be performing this show from Feb. 14- Feb 23, 2025. It will be an FIU Theatre special for Valentine’s Day.

Finally, to end off the season, FIU Theatre will be putting on “Intimate Apparel” by Lynn Nottage.

This play is about a Black seamstress named Esther Mills, who makes lingerie for wealthy “uptown” women as well as “downtown women of the night” in 1905. Without giving too much away, Esther is torn between two romances, each with their own snags and obstacles.

“Intimate Apparel” delves into race relations in 1905, between Black people and themselves, as well as Black people and white people.

It also touches upon religious differences, the way men and women saw each other in that time, interpersonal relationships, friendships and romances, sewing, of course; and the theme of intimacy—do we truly know someone?

If this play piques your interest, FIU will be putting it on from April 4-13, 2025. You can read more details about the plot here.

So, it seems like a very productive year for FIU Theatre, with lots of dynamic productions. If you are interested in catching a show, tickets are already on sale at theatre.fiu.edu.
