Boasting a canorous karaoke, The Latin Student Union and FIU Public Relations Student Society of America hosted a potluck night to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in GC’s game room on Oct. 2.

Students from both organizations brought food and drinks from around Latin America, and spirits and music were high as the group came together to sing, dance, and play games together.

“FIU has a huge Hispanic population,” said FIU PRSSA Vice President and Community Impact Chair, Elisabeth Rogers-Paulus, “so we wanted to make sure that as PR, we’re representing that community, and we’re kind of making a fun space where we can network and connect with each other, eat together, sing together, and it’s just a fun event!”

Pastelitos, croquetas, and cola of various flavors were laid out for students to hang around and try as others sang.

“Hispanic Heritage month (to me), means to be proud of where you’re from,” said student Jose Valentin, who showed up to the event with a pair of bongos and a drum set, intending to play along to the music.

“Being Latina means a lot to me, and coming to this event means I get to celebrate it somehow,” said Daviana Medina, FIU PRSSA President.

After some eating and chatting, students gathered around and sung their hearts out.

Overall, the event promoted the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month in a fun, engaging way, bringing people together to enjoy their latino heritage, and some good times.
