The women’s soccer team extends its win streak to five games, beating New Mexico State 3-0 at Leyva Family Field on Oct. 3 as they remain first in the conference.
The Panthers show no sign of slowing down as they dominate their opponents.
Things were going the Panthers’ way from the start as New Mexico State junior Jena Johannes was shown a red card in just the third minute of the game.
After that, FIU was able to control the game and their opponent easily as they held New Mexico State to zero shots on target during the first half while the home team took nine shots and five on target.
The first goal for the Panthers came in the 43rd minute after a great assist by graduate student Camille Sahirul to senior Noemi Paquin, who scored her ninth goal of the season.
FIU didn’t waste any time coming off halftime as they doubled their lead with a goal by senior Nikole Solis in just the fifth minute of play.
Sophomore Valery Restrepo had another quiet night as she was only forced to intervene two times during the game.
Paquin made it 3-0 as she found the back of the net for the 10th time this season in the 61st minute in yet another multiple-goal performance by the Panthers’ top scorer.
The senior has been on a tear this season, leading the conference in shots on goal (27) and goals (10).
For the fifth game in a row, FIU scored at least three goals as they keep winning games and maintain a perfect 3-0 record against their Conference USA rivals.
Before the start of the game, the Panthers honored the seniors on the team with a special ceremony that featured the player’s families and friends.
FIU will look to continue its good fortune when they face The University of Texas at El Paso Miners at home in Leyva Family Field on Sunday, Oct. 6.
