FIU, a university steeped in Latin culture, is already halfway though Hispanic Heritage Month! The Hispanic population in Miami has shaped South Florida’s tastes, with the humble Cubano becoming Florida’s state sandwich.
As we continue to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, here are five food spots near Modesto Maidique Campus and Biscayne Bay Campus where Hispanic FIU students could savor a bite of Miami cuisine.
Luis Galindo’s Latin American 2

Serving authentic Cuban specials, Luis Galindo’s Latin American 2 is only six minutes away from MMC.
Some of their dishes include vaca frita, a fried flank steak, for $18.95 and their Cubano Regular sandwich for $9.95.
Latin American 2 is open from 7 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. from Friday to Saturday.

Eight minutes away from FIU’s main campus is Rinconcito Cubano 107, located at 70 NW 107th Ave, Miami, FL 33172 .
Rinconcito Cubano boasts to satisfy Cuban cravings with their Churrasco ala Parilla, or grilled skirt steak, $26.99, and Chicharrones de Pollo, or fried chicken chunks, $14.99.
From Sunday to Thursday, they open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
They are also open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

This next spot is 10 minutes away from MMC. A restaurant serving Colombian specialties, they are known for dishes like Ceviche de Chicharrón con Chorizo, $14.95.
However, one of their popular dishes is their Gran Bandeja Paisa “La Original”. Sold at $25.95, the dish comprises of beans, rice, pork rinds, chorizo, meat, ripe plantain, tostón, a fried egg, avocado, corn on the cob, baked potato and Arepa with Hogao (Colombian Creole sauce).
Bandeja Paisa is open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. from Monday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.

Restaurante Área 57 is a Colombian restaurant and bakery located at 16850 Collins Ave #102, Sunny Isles Beach, FL 33160, only 12 minutes away from BBC.
The restaurant sells Pollo Empanizado for $20.99 and a roast beef sandwich for $13.99.

Abuela’s Kitchen Latin American

Only nine minutes away from BBC, Abuela’s Kitchen Latin American is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant located at 1917 NE 168th St North Miami Beach, FL 33162.
While they only offer takeout services, some foods served here include ropa vieja for $17.50, picadillo cubano for $15, and pan con lechon for $12.50.
