After suffering a tough loss, the FIU women’s soccer team looks to get back on track when they face the University of Texas at El Paso at home.
This match was originally scheduled for Oct. 6, however, due to bad weather it had to be postponed and will take place this Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium
After a historic run in which they won seven straight games, scoring at least three goals in each match, the Panthers suffered their first conference, and fourth overall, defeat of the season against Kennesaw State.
Despite the loss, the Panthers were not dominated by their opponent. FIU had a total of 25 shots, nine from senior Noemi Paquin, compared to the Owls four. They also had eight corner kicks to the visiting team’s zero.
FIU’s sophomore goalkeeper Valery Restrepo did not have much work during the game despite the three goals as the Panthers only gave up four shots the entire game.
The last match also ended the six-game scoring streak for C-USA goals leader Noemi Paquin, who tops the conference in goals (13), shots (68), shots per game (4.86), goals per game (0.93), points per game (2.00) and total points (28).
Having already clinched their spot in the Conference USA Tournament, FIU will look to win their last three matches of the regular season, which will all be played at home, and bounce back before the tournament.
The team has been having an outstanding statistical season as they are in the top three in points, shots, goals and goals allowed.
The Panthers next opponent, the UTEP Miners, has not been having a great season. They have lost four of their last five games and find themselves with a 4-7-3 record and 1-4-1 record within the conference.
Having already reached double-digit wins for the first time since 2012, the Panthers look to continue making history and claim their first-ever C-USA championship.
