Football looks to get back in the win column against Kennesaw State

The FIU football team is traveling north to face the Kennesaw State Owls on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Kennesaw, Georgia.

In their previous game, the Panthers took a close 34–31 loss against Jacksonville State. Despite putting in one of their best efforts of the season, the team fell just short and were officially eliminated from bowl contention.

Although the Panthers have nothing left to play for, the amount of fight they show in their final two games will be something to watch for. It will be the main point of interest in their matchup against Kennesaw State.

The Owls have had a rough start to life in the FBS, with a 1-9 record on the year. Their most recent game was a close loss to Sam Houston with a score of 23-17 in overtime.

Kennesaw State’s anemic offense ranks last in the conference in both points per game (17.1) and yards per game (250.7.)

The offense doesn’t seem to lean towards the run or pass, with the Owls recording 114.5 passing yards and 136.2 rushing yards per game.

Though their defense is better, it’s not by much. The Owls rank eighth in the conference in points allowed per game (31.5), yards allowed per game (411.5), and passing yards allowed per game (241)

Their one statistical saving grace is their rush defense, which ranks fourth in the conference with 170.5 yards allowed per game.

Some other stats to note include the Owls allowing the second fewest sacks in the conference with 15, as well as leading the conference with 10 forced fumbles.

Despite their record, the Owls do have a few difference makers on their squad.

Sophomore quarterback Davis Bryson has completed 116 of his 206 passes for a total of 1,222 yards, six touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Senior running back Michael Benefield has run for 468 yards and scored 5 touchdowns on the year. Sophomore linebacker Donelius Johnson leads the Owls with 75 tackles and 3.5 sacks respectively.

In order for the Panthers to come out of Georgia with a win, they need to remain focused. With bowl contention out of the question and some distractions emerging around the program recently, this game will be a test of the players’ fortitude.

Looking to get a win in their last road trip of the year, the FIU football team is traveling north to face the Kennesaw State Owls on Saturday, Nov. 23 in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.

Prediction: Kennesaw State 24, FIU 6
