With Thanksgiving coming to an end, vibrant musical performances in December pave the way.
Featuring the Herbert and Nicole Wertheim School of Music, here’s a list of events to look out for in the upcoming month.
Get ready for a spectacular evening of music, on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m, the FIU Percussion Ensemble, guided by Colin Williams, is set to join with the dynamic and electrifying FIU Brass Choir, led by Omar Lateef, for a concert that will leave you breathless.
Dr. Colin R. Williams is a skilled percussionist, composer, and educator, known for his versatility in a wide range of musical styles.
He has performed as a concerto soloist with renowned ensembles, collaborated with professional orchestras, and conducted multiple recital tours and workshops all throughout the United States. They hold a doctorate of the musical arts from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, along with a doctoral cognate in musical theory.
Omar Lateef is a renowned musician and teacher with a focus on jazz and classical music.
As the lead trumpet player for the Paradise Big Band and a Trumpet Performing Specialist with the Nu Deco Ensemble, Lateef has a wealth of experience playing alongside well-known musicians and orchestras, such as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Having graduated with a Bachelor of Music from Juilliard and a Master of Music from Yale, he is committed to helping students advance their musical careers.
As these two groups join forces to produce a rich and lively musical experience, an evening full of complex rhythms and soaring harmonies is sure to follow.
Coming up next, on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m, the FIU Saxophone Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Noah J. Brisson, will deliver an incredible performance featuring a mix of classic and contemporary works on stage.
By showcasing their mastery on string quartets to original compositions, the FIU Saxophone Quartet pushes the boundaries of what the saxophone can do. Join this special opportunity and celebrate a night of brilliance with talented musicians.
Following on Dec. 5 at 3:30 p.m, the FIU Wertheim Music Departmental Recital demonstrates their talent and creativity with their unique styles. After countless hours of practice, these young musicians are ready to share their passion on stage.
Each piece has been carefully selected to showcase emerging talents, making this event noteworthy. With free admission, this offers an opportunity for oneself to enjoy a mindful break and be inspired from the drive and artistry of young talents.
And for the big finale, on Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m, the FIU Gospel Choir, directed by Gospel artist Glenda Foster, who has over 25 years of experience with gospel choirs, welcomes people to a celebration of joyful harmonies and uplifting melodies that will genuinely touch you.
The performance promises to uplift, inspire, and energize you, regardless of how long you’ve been a fan of gospel music. It’s a wonderful opportunity to engage with a lively community that treasures music and connection.
