Winter break is here, now what?

The semester has come to an end, what a relief. But what do we do with all this free time?

The first day of winter break is the day most of us have been looking forward to since midterms. For the first time in months, there is no pressing work that needs to be done, no essay to write and no exam to study for.

It is so liberating to waste a day, to wake up to an alarm only to realize that there is no class to go to and you can go back to sleep. The freedom that comes with the end of the semester is truly unparalleled.

Though winter break is only for a few weeks, it gives us a chance to get back to who we were before the semester took hold of our lives.

But where do we start?

We can get back to our hobbies or try new ones, travel, spend time with loved ones, hang out with friends, or relax by ourselves and enjoy our free time before we get dragged back into the current of essays and quizzes in Jan.

There is so much to do in such a short amount of time. So how do we avoid choice paralysis

I like to take it day by day and create a schedule in my mind about all the things I have wanted to do throughout the semester.

I know schedules ruled our lives during the semester and we don’t want to even think about them during the break, but it helps me to relax while still getting things done.

And schedules don’t have to be serious. They can be whatever we want them to be and if we schedule watching movies all day in bed, then we can do so guilt-free because the schedule says so.

We can spend the break in bed catching up on all the sleep we missed or binge-watching the shows we’ve been putting off because of all the work and cramming we did throughout the semester.

It is easy to feel uneasy during the break after a semester of burnout and overwhelming amounts of work. I thought that I had to spend every waking hour studying and that any other use of my time was cheating myself out of a good grade.

But now that the semester is over, I have more free time then I know what to do with and it isn’t so bad.
