Sunday, during the special legislative session called by Governor DeSantis, Republican Senators filed a bill which would end in-state tuition for undocumented immigrants, known as “Dreamers.”

“Dreamers” are the recipients of TheDream.US Scholarship. The scholarship is offered to undocumented students, providing these students in-state tuition rates.

The students must meet the requirements of attending a Florida high school for 3 years, graduating from a Florida high school, and being currently enrolled in a Florida university.

There are approximately 300 Dreamers attending FIU.

The Senate bill, SB 20-A and the identical bill HB 19-A filed in the House of Representatives, echo similarities to bill SB 244 filed by Senator Randy Fine a few days ago.

These bills, all containing similar wording, outline the plan of removing the benefits of undocumented students from postsecondary Florida institutions.

According to the Florida Senate website, SB 20-A and HB 19-A are considered identical. There is no mention of Sen. Fine’s SB 244 bill.

According to bill HB 19-A, the removal of in-state tuition from immigrants and certain students will be effective on July 1st, 2025.
