Last Friday, the Asian Student Union held a Studio Ghibli general body meeting, their second of the year. Held at the Student Academic Success Center in room 202. ASU offered stickers, arts and crafts, trivia, and games, all studio Ghibli themed.
“This is a community that’s very welcoming,” said Leah Moo Young, marketing major and ASU President “not just to Asians, but to everyone in general.”
Alongside Studio Ghibli activities, ASU also found inspiration in Netflix’s Squid Game, inviting everyone to play “Mingle” as featured in season two of the show.
Attendees formed groups based on prompts given by the ASU board, such as “Favorite Ghibli movie?” and “Coffee or tea?”.

After “Mingle”, attendees engaged in healthy discussion in a game ASU called “Let’s Argue!”, where they again gave prompts and encouraged the crowd to fight their case.
Prompts included “Which Ghibli movie is best?”, “TikTok or Instagram reels?”, and “Who will win the Superbowl, the Chiefs or the Eagles?” (Spoiler, it was the Eagles).

“Mingle” and “Let’s Argue!” had members new and old chatting, making friends, and enjoying each other’s company.
“We want to promote an environment of inclusivity, a space to come together” said Naya Guillen, marketing major and Vice President of ASU.
The final game of the meeting was a Studio Ghibli trivia challenge, where points were awarded to the team that could correctly identify a Ghibli movie from a still image.
Attendees were also given supplies to create their very own Soot Sprites, featured in the 2001 Oscar-winning movie Spirited Away.

A new logo for the club was also unveiled at the meeting and offered all who attended buttons displaying the icon.
“We really just want to promote an environment of inclusivity, a space to come together,” said Naya Guillen, marketing major and Vice President of ASU.
The Asian Student Union is an Asian interest club, and welcomes all FIU students to join.
