Hosted by Student Support Services, a Valentine’s social was held on February 13, 2025.

Students were first greeted by different stations to either draw, make origami, or create bracelets. All the tables were filled with the supplies they needed, whether that was string and beads, markers and coloring paper, or scissors and origami paper. With the event lasting two hours, students were able to craft pieces for themselves and loved ones. The chairs were also fairly close, allowing one to socialize more easily.

The event also gave out free snacks including cupcakes, cookies, and drinks. This was accompanied by a relaxing music mix heard throughout the room that gave students peace of mind as they focused on their crafts.

Elsa Montealegre, Advisor for Student Support Services at FIU and majoring in higher education administration,  explains their mission for this event.

“We want to create a space for individuals to come and have fun, to socialize and get creative. We also wanted more students to know about us, as not a lot of people know about SSS.”

Dianna Scott, an English major and a part of the marketing team for SSS at FIU , encourages students to come to SSS events. .

“We try to promote togetherness. Not everyone has a sweetheart, so it’s nice to come here to hang out with friends and have fun, make crafts and destress.”

For the origami section, there were plenty of papers that showed examples of how to make certain origami like a lotus flower or a rose. In the coloring section, there were pictures of certain animals or things to fill in, making it satisfying when one completed it. Finally, there was a  bracelet section where different colors of beads including letters and colors were used to make bracelets.

Briana De Leon, President of SSS and majoring in psychology, talks about their favorite part about hosting this event.

“Just seeing everyone work together and being focused on their craft is my favorite part. Working in silence and de-stressing after exams was refreshing.”

Overall, students left feeling refreshed and motivated to share their creations with their loved ones.
