It’s not often that Women In Medicine find time to unwind.
Thursday, Feb. 13th, the organization offered students a break from their rigorous coursework by hosting a leisurely painting night in honor of Valentine’s Day. Students of all majors were invited to socialize and paint on vinyls, lanterns, and canvases.
A beautiful assortment of colorful records brightened CP 101. Students were drawing plenty of creative inspiration from different sources.

“I think a lot of other clubs do a lot of paintings on tote bags and canvases, and we just wanted to be different,” said Vianca Vasquez, biology senior and Co-President of Women in Medicine.
“We thought that Vinyl painting was a really cool idea. We saw it on Pinterest first, and we said, ‘Why not’, and found a good offer on Amazon.”
Many students felt the event was fun and offered a space to interact with others in their field while enjoying a creative activity.

“I like going here because it is something away from school, but it still offers that ability to communicate and engage with people,” said Nayuli Gonzalez, a junior aspiring to switch from Psychology to Nursing.
Gonzalez drew inspiration from a post she saw on Pinterest of someone who had painted the sky from the popular Nickelodeon TV series “Spongebob Squarepants.”

The event attracted a much larger audience than expected. The organization ran out of vinyl records 15 minutes into the event’s start, and students were soon left with only lanterns to paint on.
Among the students who came to the Women In Medicine’s Vinyl Painting event were couples who came to bask in its Valentine’s Day theme.
“We just saw the flyers on Instagram,” said Catherine Vareno and Brian Vazconez, one of the present couples.

Vareno and Vasconez stippled trees onto a record and took inspiration from the late Bob Ross, an eminent artist and TV show host.
Vianca Vazquez, Co-President of the Women in Medicine club, said that the club had done some vinyl painting events in the past.
Students may expect another Vinyl Painting event by Women In Medicine next spring.
