In collaboration with the Miami-Dade Adoption Center, the Pre-Veterinary Society held a pet adoption event last Thursday on the Graham Center lawns.
Dogs Doris, Hazel, Coco and Esse were all up for adoption at the event.
“There are a bunch of animals in the shelter, we had to get the word out,” said Bianca Monserrate, biology major and Pre-Veterinary Society event coordinator.
“We have a lot of connections, a lot of students here.” she continued, “We thought it would be a great way for the puppies to get adopted. Last event, all six puppies got adopted.”
According to ASPCA, about 6.3 million household pets reside in animal shelters in the United States. In 2023, Miami-Dade shelters housed 1,000 pets, well above shelter capacity.

“Why shouldn’t you adopt?” said Samantha Morales, a marine biology major and Pre-Veterinary Society president, “You help poor animals out in the streets with no home, and prevent them from being euthanized.”
FIU’s Pre-Veterinary Society provides community to Panthers looking to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.
Morales explains, “We help and connect all students with each other. We help them prepare for vet school, and see if that’s the career they want by exposing them to the veterinary experience.”
At the event, students were encouraged to help Doris, Hazel, Esse and Coco in any way they could. Behavioral neuroscience major Katherine Douglas decided to sign up as a foster volunteer.
“My whole life, I was into domestic animal rescue in Peru,” Douglas said, “We did a lot of cat and dog rescues. At one point, we had 22 cats and four dogs in my house.”
“Animals have always been a big part of my life. I would say it’s necessary for everyone to have a pet,” she concluded.
By the end of the event, Doris had found a fur-ever home.
