Le Cercle Francais and Pi Delta Phi, FIU’s two French organizations, encouraged students to get crafty at their DIY bookmark-making event.

Held at the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at MMC, the organizations offered a variety of decorative paper and French-themed stickers for students to design their bookmarks with.

Professor Amilcar Castellano, who specializes in Pathology and is in charge of the Honors College study abroad program in France, attended the event.

“In the French Honors abroad program, we do a lot of reading,” Professor Castellano explained. “I wanted them to have something of their own to guide their reading.”

With the help of French music to set the scene, students used the various craft supplies to collage a unique bookmark for their personal use.

Les Cercle Francais and Pi Delta Phi are French and Francophone appreciation clubs, educating on the language and cultures of various French-speaking countries. Although they are two separate organizations, they are run by the same board.

Membership in the clubs involves participation in various events, activities, and philanthropic work related to French culture. Currently ongoing is the Spring 2025 French Film Festival, organized by both clubs and held in Graham Center room 140 for one Thursday a month.

“To me, these clubs are the closest way to be in touch with culture and language, meet people, and do artistic things,” Professor Castellano said.

“These are clubs that teach you things you would not learn in a classroom,” he continued.
