In Spring 2025, Wells Fargo ceased their Campus Card Program at FIU, which offered retail banking services.
The company has decided to close several of its branches across the nation as part of a new strategy to transition its services from in-person to digital.
Wells Fargo has been informing students, faculty, and staff about the changes being implemented in debit card functionality.
On March 21, ATMs and retail options were closed.
During this transition period, Wells Fargo accounts and benefits linked to FIU OneCards will remain open and active until further notice.
In the same way, FIU OneCards linked to Wells Fargo will continue to have debit functionality for a period of time following the closure of the branch.
FIU’s banking service change will preserve OneCard functionalities, including on-campus access and transactions for meal plans and FIU Cash.
FIU offers alternative banking options to students, including the University Credit Union’s branch at MMC’s PG-2, also known as the Blue Garage. Additional ATM locations are available at the Graham Center and Wolfe University Center. Students can also utilize the Ocean Bank ATM situated outside the Ocean Bank Convocation Center at MMC.
The university continues to send reminders regarding next steps and encouraging students to visit Universal Credit Union for more information about their services.
FIU’s Office of Business Services is currently working to find a competitive solicitation to find a financial institution that will provide similar on-campus retail banking and ATM services with their initial goal being a summer 2025 opening.
According to Roger Clegg, Assistant Vice President of FIU’s Office Of Business services, Wells Fargo will directly communicate with students who have linked their OneCards to their bank accounts, informing them of the changes.
“Wells Fargo account holders need to pay close attention to communications from Wells Fargo,” says Clegg. “Any funds, anything in those accounts are not gonna change, it’s just how you access them.”
Over the next couple of months, communications will be sent out to account holders from Wells Fargo.
One of these upcoming communications that is being sent out soon is regarding the delinking of the card, and another communication talking about their customers and the fee benefits associated with Wells Fargo student accounts, which will be coming out a couple of months later.
Any sort of benefits or partnership with FIU and student accounts, will end towards the end of the year.
Wells Fargo accounts will still remain open and active for anyone who has a Wells Fargo bank account. The owner of the account will just have to use his Wells Fargo debit card rather than their FIU one card when that delinking happens.
