The passion of the students attending the GameHERs Power-Up With Pride event could be heard from the halls of the second floor of Graham Center. With the karaoke machine turned all the way up, students were singing songs from musicals such as Meet the Plastics from Mean Girls and Seasons of Love from Rent.

In light of Pride Month, GameHERS invited LGBT+ students and allies to GC on Tuesday, the 17th. Students bonded over music, videogames and other pop culture staples in the queer community while partaking in an assortment of activities.

GameHER’s is a chapter at FIU dedicated to empowering the voices of women, marginalized genders, and allies in the gaming industry.

The club often tries to provide students with events where they can find a sense of community and safety in being themselves.

Students made bracelets, sang karaoke, played Nintendo Switch games, took photos at the photo booth and helped themselves with refreshments.

Angela Lopez, an art history junior, attended the Power-Up with pride and immersed herself in the bracelet-making portion of the event.

“There’s a good community here, everyone seems to be having a good time making bracelets and snacking and singing karaoke,” said Lopez.

The passion of the students partaking in the karaoke could be heard from the halls of the second floor of Graham Center, and students were singing songs from musicals such as Meet the Plastics from Mean Girls and Seasons of Love from Rent.

“Karaoke has been very popular today. There’s a lot of people singing,” said GameHER’s president, Mariah Harris.

Among some of the eventgoers were members from HeartBEATS A Cappella, FIU’s very own all gender competitive a cappella group.

“We showed up to support!” Alyssa Ferro-Lloret, executive director of HEARTBEATS A Cappella, said, “We actually have a collaborative event coming up on Jul. 2. It’s called Rhythm Games.”

The HEARTBEATS A Cappella director mentioned looking forward to the collaboration with GameHERs, as both organizations value building a space for LGBT+ students and allies.
As for other GameHER’s future events, you can expect to see their Game Art with GameHERs event on Jul. 24, where students can put their draftsmanship skills to use and create some fan art of their favorite videogames.
