International students at Florida International University should be aware of a major change in U.S. visa policy that could affect both incoming and returning students.
On June 18, 2025, the U.S. State Department announced that all applicants for F, M, and J visas (the categories used by international students and exchange visitors) will now face enhanced social media screening as part of the visa application process. This means that if you are planning to study at FIU or renew your student visa, your social media presence will be reviewed by U.S. consular officers for signs of what officials describe as “hostility toward the United States,” including perceived anti-government sentiments or support for terrorism.

FIU is home to more than 3,800 international students from over 142 countries, and the university’s reputation as one of the most globally diverse institutions in the U.S. means many members of the Panther community could be affected. For students still waiting for visa interviews (or planning to apply in the near future), this new screening adds another layer of uncertainty.
This expanded screening policy aligns with a broader immigration platform proposed by President Donald Trump.
PantherNOW will continue to follow this story and provide updates relevant to the FIU community. If you have questions or concerns about your visa status, contact FIU ISSS at isss.fiu.edu or visit their office on campus.
