The FIU chapter of Turning Point USA mourned founder Charlie Kirk’s death throughout the week of September 15th. Kirk, a controversial right-wing activist and public debater, was killed during a debate at Utah Valley University, and his death has led to an outpouring of grief and support for his family. In a series of posts on their Instagram page, the FIU Chapter described Kirk as “…more than a leader; he was a bold and faithful voice for truth in a time of great division.” They also described Kirk as a mentor, a role model, and a warrior for Christ.
The chapter vowed in the same post to “…continue the work Charlie began, advancing liberty, free markets, and Christian values on campus and beyond.”

Kirk was deeply involved with the FIU Chapter’s founding, and remained close friends with now State Representative Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami), who founded the FIU Chapter a decade ago and later made it one of the largest organizations on the MMC campus. An official memorial service for Kirk was announced for today, September 15th, at 6:00 pm in the SASC for both FIU students and members of the public to attend.

FIU President Jeanette Núñez also released a statement addressing Kirk’s assassination and urged the FIU community to reaffirm its commitment to civil discourse, empathy, and intellectual openness, noting the words of Professors Robert P. George and Cornel West, who earlier this year emphasized at FIU the importance of embracing dialogue across differences.
