The FIU men’s soccer team will face the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. for Hispanic Heritage Night at Leyva Family Field at FIU Soccer Stadium.
The Panthers are returning home after securing a close 1-0 win over Memphis in Tennessee, which improved their record to 2-2-2.
FIU and FGCU have faced each other 16 times, with the Panthers winning 12 of those games and only losing four.
The team coached by sixth-year head coach Kyle Russell, is currently in a five-game winning streak against their state rivals.
It has been an irregular season for the team so far. They have won only two of their first six games and have yet to secure back-to-back victories.
Despite their inconsistent start to the year, one aspect of their game that has not failed is their goal scoring. The team has only failed to score a goal in one game and has had seven different goal scorers.
Leading the scoring are Eduardo Mustre, Pasquale Capriati, and Johan Helan with two goals each. They are followed by Scott Neil, David Boccuzzo, Enrique Mutsoli, and Alejandro Nasato with one goal each.
Following his 90-minute performance against Tennessee, graduate student Owen Travis was named American Conference Defender of the Week. Travis has played a total 418 minutes, including five starts and three complete matches.
The defender was not the only one honored last week, as senior David Boccuzzo earned a spot on the league’s Weekly Honor Roll. This recognition comes after the transfer player from Louisville, who has played in all six games this season including five starts, scored his first goal for the Panthers with his game-winner against the Tigers.
