The rhythmic beat of salsa music drifts down the hallway every Thursday night, drawing students into a world of energy, movement, and community.
Salsa Vida teaches people at all levels of salsa, along with different styles, from Cuban style to Cali, giving students the chance to explore Latin dance traditions while building confidence on the dance floor.
Salsa Vida provides a social outlet for members to come together and share their love of salsa, while also offering opportunities to perform on stage and advance through the classes to eventually become instructors.
I observed and spoke with several board members during the first salsa class of the year this past Thursday, where the room was filled with energy and a welcoming atmosphere that embraced both new and returning students.
I had the opportunity to ask club representative Joshua Solorzano, majoring in Physical Education, what the mission of the salsa club is. He said it has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his college life. “For years I’ve always wanted to learn how to dance,” Joshua said. “As a stress reliever and a fun activity, it builds confidence for both young men and women. This is honestly the most freeing expression your body can go through.”

When we think about dancing, many of us feel vulnerable, especially when stepping onto the floor alone. That’s why I asked Joshua what he would say to a student hesitant to join because they believe they “can’t dance.” His response was honest: “For anybody who’s brand new, my first impression was, ‘What the heck am I doing?’ I had no clue, I had two left feet. Just come. If you want to learn a skill, you have to put yourself out there and understand there will be moments when you think, ‘I can’t do this.’ That’s when you need to be willing to push through.”
From the very first moment, Salsa Vida’s environment is joyful and welcoming for everyone. Between the snacks and the high fives exchanged when switching lines, the sense of community fills the room. President Bridgette stands out as a talented and playful instructor, patient and respectful in her teaching, with a passion for dance that is evident in every step.
When asked what members usually enjoy most about being part of the club, Social Media Manager Carolina pointed to the atmosphere of connection. “Our members enjoy the sense of community we have and the energy that comes with it,” Carolina said. “It’s very fun and enlightening, and we make sure nobody feels left out. We all learn together, and even in the mistakes we make, we help and teach each other along the way.”
For those looking for rhythm, confidence and connection, Salsa Vida offers a place to learn, grow and celebrate the joy of dance; a community where every step is encouraged, every moment is fun, and every class is a chance to share steps.
