Open to all students, Hispanic Heritage Month’s Culturefest went underway last week. Filled with authentic Hispanic food, games, and dancing, this event was about celebration and community.
“It’s just a fun way to celebrate one’s culture and to learn a little bit more,” says Chery Pratas, one of the programming managers for the Center of Student Engagement.

The Center for Student Engagement hosts many events similar to this for students to enjoy throughout the year; past events have included ice cream socials and a Juneteenth experience event.
Even if you are not a member of the Hispanic community or any community being showcased at an event, you can still participate; these events are open to all students at FIU.
“I would say even if you’re not Hispanic, all of these celebrations are fun- it’s a good place to make friends and meet new people, and that’s what you know, our university is about it’s in the name, International.” Says Natalia Bosci, a former international student at FIU and assistant director for FIU ISSS.
One event was a Kahoot where students could win prizes for answering questions related to Hispanic and Miami culture, and of course, some bachata followed after.

You can also volunteer and help out with these community events for students yourself by contacting the Centers for Student Engagement office or simply stopping by.
“We focus on trying to bring everyone together, a big representation for different people in different communities. Our office is big on volunteers, so if you ever want to be a part of one of these programs, you can just come by the office,” says Jonathan Stamp, graphic designer for the office of Centers for Student Engagement.
The Centers for Student Engagement will host another event, Kreyòl y Cultura: A Taste of Two Worlds, celebrating Haitian and Latin heritage through food and community, while highlighting themes of identity and resilience.
The event will be held at GC243 on October 7 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm and is open to all students.
