The FIU men’s soccer team heads west for a non-conference match against the University of Portland, looking to bounce back from a rivalry loss against Florida Atlantic University.

The Panthers face the Pilots on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 10 p.m. at Merlo Field in Portland, Oregon.

FIU fell 2-0 to FAU in their last outing, conceding a penalty in the second half before the Owls closed the match with a late goal. The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak and marked their first conference setback of the season.

These results move the Panthers to a 4-3-2 overall record and 2-1 in conference play.

“Those things happen, especially when you play good opponents,” Coach Kyle Russell noted earlier this season to PantherNOW. “I’m just proud of our team sticking together, sticking to the plan, and fighting through the adversity.”

FIU’s attack continues to be led by Pasquale Capriati, who stands as the team’s top scorer with four, while freshman Johan Helan adds his own edge with three goals.

Midfielder Scott Neil serves as a steady playmaker, creating chances for the attack. Between the posts, Nigel Van Haveren anchors the defense with 28 saves.

Portland enters this match with a 7-0-1 overall record and 1-0 in conference play, ranking No. 2 in the nation.

With little history between the programs, FIU and Portland meet for just the fourth time.

Facing one of the top ranked teams, the Panthers must approach the matchup with caution.

As the team travels west, FIU looks to reset their rhythm and prove themselves against the nation’s No. 2 team.
