Thursday, Sept. 18th, the Transfer Social was hosted by the Honors College, transforming the space into a lively hub of laughter, games, and conversation.
The event welcomed transfer students from across campus, offering them a chance to connect, share experiences, and build a sense of community.
From the food to the board games to the welcoming hosts, it was encouraging to see such thoughtful consideration for students continuing their college journey on campus.
Speaking with Nia Virgo, president of the Honors College Leadership Council and a senior majoring in criminal justice and sociology.
When asked about the main goal of hosting the Transfer Social, she explained, “One of the main pieces of feedback we usually get from transfer students is that it’s hard to find events where they’re able to connect with others in the same situation. We felt like this event would provide a good opportunity for transfer students to come together and have a comfortable space where they can play games and connect in a low-stress environment.”
To know how this event fits into the university’s efforts to support transfer students, Danny Smith, a senior majoring in finance and vice president of the Honors College Leadership Council, shared, “I feel like it’s a very light environment where there’s no high pressure. It’s just a chance to get to know the staff and other FIU students; it’s basically networking while having fun.”
Toward the end of the social, to know what the board hoped students would take away from the event, Lucia Barreiro, a student intern with the Honors College Engagement and Community Team, shared, “What I hope students take away from today is all the opportunities they have to meet other students, whether they’re transfer students, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or even seniors within the Honors College. There’s a whole community available for them, including advisors, event interns, and the engagement team. I hope they get to meet new people.”
Overall, the event achieved its purpose by creating an environment where students who transferred to FIU feel just as important to the college community.
With opportunities to share spaces, play board games, enjoy tasty food, and have simple conversations, we felt appreciated and welcomed into this new chapter of our college journey. It was truly a lovely afternoon filled with joy and connection.
