Arcade cabinets and a PS3 with Rock Band booted up may seem a little out of place at FIU’s Green Library.
However, for the semester’s Library Fair, nostalgia was the theme of the game, encouraging students to bask in the past while enjoying the many resources available at FIU during the semester.
These were a few of the words shared with me by librarian, lecturer, and organizer of the event, Sarah J. Hammill. “We people working at the library love doing it because we want to interact and engage with the students.”
She also emphasized how students may be unaware of the various services offered to them by their university, along with the desire in events such as these to make learning about the multiple services fun and interactive.
Faculty from various areas of the school who manage the digital archives, library catalog, government services, & the other separate libraries such as the law schools (located at FIU’s College of Law & open to anyone) as well as the Medical Library (located on the third floor of the Green Library) were present to inform on how to get in touch and utilize all they have to offer, with snacks and cake as refreshments.

Staff from FIU’s own Wolfsonian museum were present too, with a lovely vintage toaster on display, as well as info on internship opportunities and the extent of their interesting collection located at the Art Deco district of Miami Beach.
Hannah Gauthier, their digitization specialist, had this to say:
“Everything is so focused on campus, so not a lot of people know where we are, so we get invited to come here and show off what we have, what we have available to students, let them know that we are here and available for research, for internships, for everything like that.”
Hopefully, all who attended now know where to turn to for some extra help on those assignments, and can hope to see more interesting themes and even more visual flair at future library events.
Stay cool and informed, Panthers.
