The Graham Center at Florida International University’s Modesto Maidique Campus transformed into a cozy gamer haven on Thursday night as the FIU GameHers hosted their Bingo Night, a welcoming mix of creativity, laughter, and friendly competition.
Tables lined with pink tablecloths and scattered cherry blossom stems set the scene, while craft supplies for friendship bracelets, painting, and origami added a personal touch. Guests snacked on free pizza as they filled their bingo cards and connected over shared gaming interests.
“We lift up any marginalized voice in gaming,” said Lilian McCullough, a freshman political science major and general intern for the club. “A lot of video games are male-dominated, so we try to make an inclusive environment for all women and femme-identifying gamers
Founded last November as a chapter of a national organization, GameHers has quickly grown into one of FIU’s most inclusive communities for women gamers. Club President Mariah Harris, a senior computer science major, said the idea for Bingo Night started with one of their event coordinators, who simply wanted someone to play with.
“So we just threw this to get the community together with the GameHers,” Harris said. “The diversity here is amazing, and everyone’s so welcoming, and it’s always a good time.”
For many members, the club’s events are a way to unwind and meet people with similar passions. “The events are definitely my favorite, they’re so fun,” said Jalisa Ervin, a freshman behavioral neuroscience major. “I won bingo and got a tote bag, notebook, pens and a lanyard!”
As the night wrapped up, laughter and chatter filled the GC ballroom, proof that the GameHers’ mission to create a safe, inclusive gaming space is already making an impact.
