Men’s basketball returns home to face state rivals

The FIU men’s basketball team returns to the Ocean Bank Convocation Center to face Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m..

The Panthers currently hold a 1-2 record and are looking to get back to winning after suffering back-to-back losses. 

After an opening day blowout against Florida National, (101-49), FIU dropped their first road game of the season against Big10 team Nebraska (66-96)  and most recently losing to LSU (81-98).

Against the Tigers (3-0), Senior Corey Stephenson recorded his first double double of his FIU career as he finished with a stat line of 25 points,10 rebounds and 6 assists, while senior Julian Mackey dropped 24 points on 9-13 shooting. 

Hamed Olayinka finished with nine points and redshirt junior Ibrahim Olajuwon had a career-best eight points on 4-5 shooting.

The schedule for FIU is not getting any easier as they have two games (against James Madison and Omaha), to prepare for a three game stretch in which they will face state rivals. 

The Panthers will face  Florida Gulf Coast University (Dec. 3, 7 p.m.), Jacksonville (Dec. 6, 2 p.m.) and The University of Miami (Dec. 16, 7 p.m.). 

After facing their state rivals, they will play two games (LIU and Trinity College of Jacksonville) before they begin facing conference opponents.

FIU will face the first Conference USA rival on Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. when they host the Liberty University Flames. After that, they will face only CUSA teams for the remainder of the season.
