Bridge FIU, a new chapter that launched earlier this year, is working to reduce political division on campus through open and respectful dialogue among students.
The organization aims to host discussions on the FIU campus that encourage students to engage with differing beliefs, experiences, and perspectives.
Bridge USA is a national nonprofit organization that focuses on constructive engagement with college students.
“The goal of Bridge USA is not to change minds or create centrists, but to encourage students to engage with differing beliefs, experiences, and perspectives. What unites us is not agreement on policies, but a shared mindset,” according to the BridgeUSA website.
The FIU chapter aims to foster understanding, rather than persuasion. The chapter focuses on empathy and open-mindedness, encouraging students to express strong beliefs respectfully and productively.
Bridge FIU’s vice president of outreach, German Mata, shared on Instagram that “at a time when academic and personal liberties are at stake, an organization that acts as a haven for those seeking discourse or mutual understanding is essential.”
The club’s executive board aims to create a space where students can openly share diverse viewpoints on current issues in a constructive and respectful environment. Bridge FIU’s gatherings include discussions, events, and social meet-ups.

Earlier this month, the chapter hosted a moderated discussion on political violence and how individuals can respond to political disagreements.
Bridge FIU chapter president Celeste Soli believes that “the foundation of a successful democracy involves creating a space for individuals from all backgrounds, religions, and beliefs to express our views without attacking others or fear of being attacked.”
Part of a national network of more than 25,000 members, Bridge FIU aims to empower students to become thoughtful and engaged citizens.
