Despite the promotional activities Pitbull can do for FIU listed in the contract, he is not legally obligated to.

When FIU Athletics and the football program announced a secret guest for Vice Night, online speculation quickly circulated about a possible appearance by Pitbull. The reaction prompted a review of the FIU–Pitbull stadium naming-rights contract and the status of the promotional activities outlined in the agreement.
FIU’s naming-rights agreement with Armando Christian Pérez, professionally known as Pitbull, outlines several possible promotional activities but does not require the artist to complete them, according to the contract approved in August 2024.
The agreement, which grants Pitbull naming rights for a five-year term in exchange for annual payments of $1.2 million, lists potential promotional actions such as 12 annual social media posts, an FIU anthem, an appearance at an athletics fundraiser, and merchandise collaborations. The contract, however, states that these activities “may include” the listed items, indicating they are not mandatory.
Public expectations around Pitbull’s participation resurfaced during FIU Athletics’ Vice Night event, when students speculated online about a possible appearance by the artist. A review of Pitbull’s social media activity showed that he posted FIU-related content eight times within the first contractual year. The annual total is not limited to Instagram and includes TikTok and X (formerly Twitter) reposts. As of December 2, 2024, no FIU-related posts have been made during the second contractual year.
Merchandise collaborations have been released, but PantherNOW found no publicly available evidence that the anthem creation or athletics-fundraiser appearance has occurred. FIU Athletics and Pitbull’s label did not provide comments on the status of these activities.
At the time of the partnership’s announcement, news outlets and podcasts highlighted the promotional terms as part of FIU’s collaboration with Pitbull. In a September 2024 NPR interview, FIU Athletic Director Scott Carr stated that the partnership generated an estimated $86 million in media exposure following the announcement.
After multiple requests for comment, FIU Athletics issued the following statement: “Thank you for your interest. We appreciate the enthusiasm surrounding this historic partnership and have genuinely enjoyed our relationship with Pitbull and his team. At this time, we are not providing comment on existing agreements.”
Contract language reviewed shows no penalties or required performance measures tied to the promotional activities. Without specific obligations or repercussions, the agreement allows flexibility in whether the listed activities occur.
Although elements such as merchandise and limited-edition lapel pins have been produced, other widely discussed promotional items remain optional under the contract’s terms.
