After earning their first conference victory against Kennesaw State, the Panthers look to build momentum as they head into a series of road matchups.
The FIU Panthers (8-6, 1-2 Conference USA) will face New Mexico State (6-10, 2-2 Conference USA) on Thursday, Jan. 15, at 8 p.m.
Like FIU, New Mexico State has built its identity on the defensive end. The Panthers enter the matchup averaging 37.6 rebounds per game, narrowly ahead of the Aggies’ 36.1. FIU also creates pressure in passing lanes, forcing 13.3 steals per contest, while New Mexico State averages 10.5.
Before facing their similarly built conference opponent, the Panthers picked up a 76-65 victory over Kennesaw State.
The game opened evenly, with both teams attacking the basket and trading scores early. Kennesaw State miscues helped FIU gain a slight edge, as the Panthers closed the quarter ahead 19-17 while shooting 70% from the field.
Miscues continued to trouble the visiting team, allowing FIU to capitalize. The Panthers have scored 15 points off turnovers, and were able to build a comfortable 10-point lead heading into halftime.
Despite holding a 33-23 advantage, FIU struggled after Kennesaw State implemented an aggressive defensive strategy. The pressure disrupted the Panthers’ offensive rhythm and led to a series of fouls, allowing the visiting team to build momentum. The Owls responded with a 9-point run to close the gap to two, and continued defensive pressure eventually resulted in a 49-49 tie one minute left of the third quarter.
“On the road we’re going to face that again. In the next couple of days we’ll get in the lab and make sure we put our kids in better situations of success,” said head coach Jesyka Burks-Wiley in response to Kennesaw State’s high defensive quarter.
The fourth quarter featured frequent lead changes, with neither team able to gain sustained separation. A three-pointer by Adama Badjie Coly proved pivotal, extending the Panthers’ advantage to seven points. With a minute remaining, FIU capitalized at the free-throw line to further increase the margin and secure a 76-65 victory, marking the team’s first conference win of the season.
After their matchup against New Mexico State, the Panthers will continue their journey on the road against University of Texas at El Paso.
“You always have to play hard. The minute you relax or you’re not paying attention, they can beat you.” Coly said when addressing conference play.
This win will allow the Panthers to gain much needed confidence when facing opponents on the road.
