Last weekend, 305 Hackathon brought together FIU students who are passionate about technology for a hands-on coding experience focused on collaboration, learning, and creativity.

One of the student organizations involved was Code Crunch, a coding club founded and led by FIU students. The club is run by Brian Bazurto, a junior majoring in Computer Science and the founder and first president of Code Crunch.

Code Crunch has been active since September 2024 with a clear goal: creating a supportive community where students can help each other, share knowledge, and grow their technical skills together.

“We want Code Crunch to be a place where students feel comfortable learning, asking questions, and supporting one another,” Bazurto said.

Support from industry partners

The 305 Hackathon was supported by sponsors including Major League Hacking (MLH) powered by Google Cloud and Reach Capital, as well as ElevenLabs and Unibee. The event was also supported by several FIU student organizations such as Google Developer Group at FIU, ColorStack at FIU, CAHSI at FIU, and Raspberry Pi Code Crunch, which collaborate through the Hack University Initiative. HackUniversity serves as a centralized platform that provides students with access to resources, mentorship, and opportunities to connect with the broader tech community.

Getting involved

Code Crunch is currently looking for new e-board members, offering students a chance to take on leadership roles and help shape future tech events and workshops at FIU.

With its focus on collaboration and peer support, the 305 Hackathon showed how student-led organizations like Code Crunch are helping build a strong and welcoming tech community on campus.
