On Friday, February 6, Florida International University revealed a statue of U.S President Ronald Reagan. A ceremony honoring what would have been the President’s 115th birthday took place at FIU’s Ronald Reagan Presidential House.
The 7.8-foot-tall bronze statue was donated by the FIU Board of Trustees Chair, Carlos Duart, and created by Cuban-American artist Carlos Enrique Prado. The statue was made as a tribute to President Reagan’s leadership during the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War.
Governor Ron DeSantis attended the ceremony alongside many Cuban-Americans and elected officials, who praised the statue as a representation of the President’s anti-communist legacy.
At the ceremony, FIU President Nuñez discussed plans to leverage the University’s resources and academic expertise to support Cuba’s transition towards democracy.
