FIU marine researcher Jeremy Kiszka has partnered with Fahlo, a company that sells bracelets linked to an app providing real-time tracking information for endangered species.

Each bracelet includes a QR code that, once scanned after purchase, connects users to a platform where they can follow tagged whales and dolphins from their phones. Ten percent of bracelet sales go directly to support ongoing research at FIU.

“This partnership directly involves the public in our research through a company that donates a portion of its proceeds to expand our work on whales and dolphins,” said Kiszka. “The data we collect are already helping us better predict how vulnerable populations are affected by human activities and how to better protect them.”

Kiszka and his team tag whales and dolphins, including stranded animals that are refloated and fitted with tracking devices to monitor their movements and study the effects of climate change and human impact. The tracking data provides insight into how marine mammals respond to extreme weather events such as hurricanes and heat waves, as well as pressures from maritime traffic and pollution.

“This is the first partnership to produce multiple species for Fahlo to track, including dolphins, sperm whales, and pilot whales,” said Samantha Erb, Head of Content at Fahlo. “We’re introducing people to species they may not have even heard of before, and we’re fortunate to do it with Dr. Kiszka leading the research.”

Bracelet owners are guaranteed access to tracking for at least six months. If tracking data stops before that period ends, users receive a replacement animal to follow.

The bracelets are available in zoos, aquariums, surf and outdoor shops, and online throughout South Florida, engaging the community in ocean conservation while generating funding for important scientific research.
