This November, there will be an election for Florida’s governor. This election will decide the trajectory of Florida politics. The governor’s administration has the ability to change the curriculum taught in Florida’s public schools and universities.

Ron DeSantis, the current governor, has already implemented policies to do this when he limited “woke” teachings. He has opened the door for his predecessors to do the same.

The ideology pushed by DeSantis has put Florida colleges in a vulnerable position to be exploited. FIU students, specifically, are being taught in a time when government interference is leading to the censorship of opposing views. The future of education in Florida is highly contested. I am concerned about the direction it is going. The educational system in Florida is so malleable that people running for governor are campaigning on exploiting the curriculum; Their legislative agenda is concerning.

Given the power governors have, we should elect someone with a coherent position on the educational curriculum. The governor is supposed to serve the people, so we must elect someone who will reverse the changes DeSantis made, or we are complicit in the state Florida becomes. You need to vote and participate in our state’s future.

The governor represents the interests of the people and makes sure your interests are met. Vote for the gubernatorial candidate who has a clear legislative agenda that will support students.
