Before you leave a whoopee cushion on your dad’s La-Z-Boy or hack into your close friend’s Instagram to make an embarrassing post, find some time to collect yourself today and check out these classics ASAP.

  1. “Soul Plane” (2004)

There are many varying perspectives surrounding the artistic anomaly that is “Soul Plane”. Is it a scathing critique of the hyperconsumerism present in the airline industry masked as an uplifting rags-to-riches story? Maybe it’s an anything goes satire of post-9/11 racial stereotypes and how, what is supposed to be one of the more mundane aspects of 21st century society, will forever be one of the most stressful. Or, if you choose to see it at complete face value, it’s an incomprehensible 2000s reimagining of a much, much better spoof. Believe them all or believe none, but don’t fall for the popular notion that “Soul Plane” isn’t wildly fascinating and worth your time.

  1. “Grown Ups” (2010)

The postmodern adult is laid bare by the articulate hand of a director channeling the insight of Herzog and Woody Allen. Sandler and his crew are forced to overcome death and nostalgia itself as they reunite after a 30-year hiatus since high school to relive the glory days. Surely a tale to tug on the heartstrings of any 40-something-year-old stumbling upon this classic whilst binging with the boys. It makes you long for a time when culture was at its peak, when Bed, Bath, and Beyond embodied the weight of the universe, and LMFAO’s “Shots” would emerge as a party staple. Back when this country and cinema meant something. 7/10.

  1. “Cats” (2019)

Maybe you’ve forgotten about “Cats”, or you tried to forget about it, or you mistook it for a COVID-era hallucination. I beg you to remember the star-studded film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, one of the longest-running Broadway shows of all time. “Cats” follows a clan of extravagant street cats (who call themselves “the Jellicles”) that use the power of song and dance to decide which one of them is to be granted reincarnation in the next life–duh. It is revolutionary in its rejection of costuming, proportions, and coherent acting performances. If you’re ever feeling philosophical about mortality and what exactly a mutated anthropomorphic cat would look like, “Cats” is the film to watch. The best part: it’s nearly two hours long, and you feel every minute of it.

  1. “The Room” (2003)

There are cult classic films, there are benchmark films and then there’s “The Room”, a black comedy about Johnny, a well-off banker, dealing with the infidelity of his wife, Lisa, who is entangled with his best friend Mark. Starring, written, directed and produced by another director, Tommy Wiseau, the film masterfully takes us through the implosion of this relationship and Johnny’s life as his fiancée starts a web of lies to cover up her cheating. How does Mark feel about this? And why are there pictures of spoons everywhere in Johnny’s home? All this and more is answered in a film that has the passion of a Tennessee Williams screenplay. Oh, and tell Mark I say hello!

All good jokes contain a hint of truth, so the good news is, we’re not kidding around. Or are we? That’s up to you to figure out and us to relish in it.
